General
Motors
This was a toxic tort case involving 30 plaintiffs
that worked in the General Motors plant in Van Nuys.
A company that delivers chemicals to the former auto
plant in Van Nuys had brought the wrong chemicals to
the plant. When these chemicals were exposed to the
vat in which residue of old chemicals was present, a
dangerous gas was created. The gas rose like a cloud
and was sucked up by the air conditioning. It then spread
in the General Motors plant injuring about 60 people.
We
represented 30 plaintiffs in this action. All but our
30 clients and one other attorney's 2 clients settled
their cases for less than $10,000.00 per person very
early in the litigation.
In preparation for trial we spent almost $30,000.00
in putting together a visual aid package including an
animated video showing the course of the gas cloud as
it entered and spread throughout the General Motors
plant. We also compiled a videotape of each client's
version of the incident depicting how it had affected
their lives.
Over two hundred blow-ups were made of pertinent documents
in the case and many other visual aids. In addition
to compelling facts and vigorous presentation of each
injured client's case, we presented these to the opposition
and to the settlement judges just days before the trial
was to begin. We were able to settle our cases for an
aggregate of $3,200,000.00.
